Crop list: Cosmic Mix, Dill, Bok Choy, Garlic Curls, Buttercrunch Head Lettuce, Pea Shoots, Sorrel, Lemon Basil and Maybe Radish or Spinach

I was dating a man who did not want to deal with "our relationship". He explained to me it was OK because he really just preferred to "stick his head in the sand". To which I replied "it won't work. I'm good with a shovel."
Most of the time I choose to not listen to news. It depresses me. I loose sleep over it. I am sensitive and I hurt when others hurt. It really is easier to choose not hurting. Now I'm the one who chooses the sand, or soil considering my profession! Things are easier on the farm, even when they are hard. The purpose is so clear. We want to grow the best food possible for people who live in the Tetons. Every choice we make comes back to that last statement. But I still hear the news. I still feel the heartbreak and the social injustice people suffer. I want to go to all these people and comfort them and feed them and fix things for them and rage against the powers that be. It hurts so much, I can't. No one can. I know in my bones my calling is the farm. I know that is how I can make the world a better place. But there is more, and it involves you.
Our favorite quote by Rudolf Steiner, the founder of Biodynamic agriculture, is:

"So long as one feeds on food from unhealthy soil, the spirit will lack the stamina to free itself from the prison of the body."

We want to create positive change in this world. We want you to have the stamina to make our world better, while we keep our heads down and grow food! Maybe you help a non-profit, maybe you change diapers, maybe you work for a restaurant, we are all in this together and together we can make the world better. We can all be kinder to each other. And we don't really have to look outside our own bubble to do it. That is what I want this food to do for you.

I want every cell of this food to improve your life and our world.

Every thing we do on the farm is done with the best intentions for the Earth and humanity. We hope you can taste that in the vegetables. From the ground up, change will come, we've heard that before right?! We treat our soil as a living breathing being. We know your veggies will not be as good if the soil is not revered. It is the base, we are all rooted in it, all of us who are eating Cosmic Apple veggies. It is where change begins, from the ground up. I can do it, I can keep my head out of world news and make the world better. I can live in this world and change it without needing to understand or even hear about all that needs changing. I will tend to the soil. It is all I really know how to do, and it makes me happy.
Use the energy from this food to create the change you have been thinking of. Use the energy from this food to put your head down and work on yourself. Use the energy from this food to go out in the world and help someone. Use the energy from this food to celebrate all that is good in the world!!

Check the coolers at your site. I attached a list of prices and cuts to your email. If you know you want something, please email me and I will send it over for you. You can also tell your site hosts you have a request and I will send it the next week. We purchased 2 cows from Lifeline. They are packaged with our label because we brought them to the butcher live and for us to sell them they needed a label...and well, we are Cosmic Apple! It is really just the legalities of selling USDA inspected meat. More info then you need, but we want to be completely honest about what we have!

Crop list: Cosmic Mix, Kale, Roxy Head Lettuce, Black Summer Bok Choy, Spinach, Basil, Garlic Scapes and Maybe Radish, Arugula or Cilantro

Summer!! Monday was the Solstice. The longest day and shortest night of the year. It feels like it. 16 hours and 38 minutes of daylight in Victor! The energy of the farm shifted between Friday and Sunday afternoon. I spend a lot of the spring barefoot. The grass is tender, the soil cool and moist. My feet finally free after a winter in boots! I could walk just about anywhere barefoot, chasing the puppy down the block, checking on a child at the other end of the greenhouses, it felt good to be truly connected to the Earth.
Sunday afternoon we headed out as a family to the farm for a Father's Day/Solstice hike. My son asked me to come check on his garden. As I walked over I noticed the thistles had all of a sudden become thistle-ly! The tender spring babies were gone. On the way back to the kitchen I stepped on a bee. Oh little bee...I'm sorry! The recently mowed grass was pokey, and the soil in the garlic was hard and clumpy! My feet suddenly remembered how summer feels!
The people's energy changed too! On Monday morning the employees felt the first taste of summer chaos! Jed was tying to load the pigs in the trailer and there is always one who (wisely) does not want to go! After he rounded up 4 helpers and did some creative plywood wrangling Jed was off! Scott our "vegetable caretaker" was now behind schedule in the wash station and Noah the "workshare manager" had a LONG list of weeds to remove! Noah said it was his first day of work that felt a bit stressful in the month and a half he has been leading the crews.
It seems as though the full fire of summer is calling us all. Our energy is at it's peak. We have been pulled out into the sunshine, we have planted what we want to harvest for the year and now we must keep tending it as the fire wanes. Nothing lasts forever, the light, the dark, weeds, tasty spring greens. The passing of the Solstice begins the slow shift of light to dark.
There is a settling feeling to the Solstice, we have adjusted to the summer pace, our employees are trained and are learning their routines. The anticipation of sun on my skin and bare feet has passed! The garden is planted. We are done racing spring storms and wet soil to plant. Now we wait for the garden to tell us what to harvest!

Crop list: Cosmic Mix, Spinach, Green Onion, Bok Choy, Head Lettuce, Broccoli Raab and Oregano

Welcome to week two of veggies! Week one is always a whirlwind on the farm. It takes a lot of energy and brain power to find all of our supplies, train all the new folks and coordinate 285 (or so) folks for a veggie hand off! But we did it! With only a handful of mistakes, thanks to all for you patience! Jed and I even got to leave the farm! Jed was able to go to the Downtown Jackson sites while training our new truck driver, Ellen and the new site hosts Ollie and Nora. Dale was able to go to Wilson to train site host Kristi also! It was great to see many of you! Week two is feeling much more smooth, and soon we will be on auto pilot!
Speaking of site hosts...Ollie, Nora, Kristi, Sue and Brianna are all here to help you! Please ask them any questions you may have about the farm or your veggies! If they don't know the answer, they will write down the question and I will get back to you! They also know how to cook lots of veggies (it is in their job description!) 4 out of 5 of them have worked many hours in the garden, and are familiar with how tons of things happen on the farm. We also need one more site host in Wilson, he or she would  get a half a share for their time. If you know anyone who would like more info please send them my way!
The garden is growing wonderfully right now. The heat of last week really helped many of the crops double in size! Last Monday (6/6) the salad mix was not big enough to cut. This Monday we harvested over 220 pounds from a single bed!
The feedback (so far) on the new newsletter format has been positive. Let me know if you have any opinions you want to share! And send me your recipes! I am really excited to have a way for everyone to access them!
The cooking show!!! "Just Picked, Cooking Through a CSA" How cool is that!? I hope you watched it. We spent Sunday as a family cooking the bok choy recipe. The kids were into it! Arden (the filmmaker) has been a shareholder for some years now. Chef Eric is one of our market customers. We feel very honored that their creativity and skills overlap with what we do. They are going to travel around this summer visiting Cosmic Apple and other farms. I'm confident there will be some of the same veggies we grow, and I'm looking forward to seeing some other local farms! I will share the links to the shows as I receive them. Crop list: Sorrel, Baby Bok Choy, Pea Shoots, Green Onions, Arugula, Basil and Chives

Welcome! We are so happy to have you here! It has been another early year to start delivering veggies. In fact we believe it is the earliest year ever!! (June 8th in 2004, and June 9th in 2015 are second and third) It is time to wake up your taste buds and start feeling the effects of FRESH greens again!
The spring veggies are in their prime right now! This is the reason we decided to start shares this week. Many of these things will disappear quickly as they can't handle the heat of summer.

We are changing the newsletter this year! I have been dreaming of this format for a long time and I took the plunge. Truth be told, I'm not sure what I am doing blogging and website changing. I don't even text. So yes! Please give me feedback on how to spiff this up so it works better for you! I am most excited about the recipe format. The recipes will be much more accessible. In the past I have spent hours (yes, literally) rearranging a few recipes relevant to the week's harvest to fit a 2 page newsletter. This year, we are moving the farm news here and recipes here: recipes. The best thing is, instead of me wrestling 2-3 recipes in one newsletter, you now have access to them all. I have 19 pages of basil recipes in one spot! Maybe it will be too much. We will all have to figure it out....so please give feedback! AND please share your favorite recipes!
You can still purchase cheese and bread shares at your pick-up site, the paperwork will be there and the site hosts will be able to help. We will have Cosmic eggs and Lifeline cheese at your site this week. We will soon have Lifeline Beef and Cosmic Pork!
2016 is shaping up to be a great year. We are happy to be celebrating 20 years of Cosmic Apple and farming in the Tetons!
