After the fact 4th of July Patriotism and musings...

Jed loves being on the farm on the 4th. Not in a "rah rah" kind of way. He likes milking the cows, he likes the quiet routine to it all as town fills up and people hustle bustle about. He jokes that farming is one of the most American things he can do. I think he likes the self-sufficiency feel of it, a strong underlying tone of our country. (Mostly he may just like to have an excuse to keep him out of town!) Kind of ironic since, farming happened way before America came to be. We have been reading Little House on the Prairie with the kids. Jed and I long to be farming when things were much simpler and our county was "being discovered" It is easy to romanticize it all. Homesteading in the West, Pioneers and the "can do spirit". It's pretty easy to forget about the genocide, broken treaties and starvation, while Pa plays his fiddle after a long day of plowing. They are children's books after all!
Independence and Freedom come up a lot on the 4th. It seems we have forgotten "Independence" really means independence from the crown. It has become a bit more about "my independence from you telling me what to do". Long time farm member Ralph Mossman told me we should have a "Dependence Day" where we celebrate communities. I love it. I'm in. I'll bring the salad.
I think what I'm really trying to say is...We have so much freedom in America. But most importantly we have the freedom to make the WORLD a better place. This is a big blessing and responsibility. Use it, everyday. Know you are using it, wield your power like a Jedi Master. You had the freedom to choose whether or not to support our farm. We are grateful you choose us and we hope the things we grow give you the stamina to make the world better.

Farm notes....
Featured Meat of the Week: Pork Spare Ribs
Yum. Perfect for grilling goodness, and way easier then all those competitive grill masters would have you think. Here is how I do them. Thaw completely the day before you want them. Put a dry rub on them, Refrigerate overnight. The next morning put them in your slow cooker (crock pot) with some bar-b-q sauce, cook all day on low. They taste great right out of the slow cooker or you can finish them on the grill really quick for a bit of crunchiness! A good estimate is 1# per person. Ours sell for $8.25/lb. They are great with a huge salad and some sauteed collards, spinach or kale. You can always email me if you want me to reserve anything in the cooler for you!
